Cadmium Orange and Raw Sienna in wet-into-wet offers a softer surface. Prussian Blue is used sparsely and is tonally similar to the warm colours. The painting shown right was made on the spot and I exaggerated the colours I could see for greater impact. The bright light gave me the opportunity to use high-key, strong colour and definite contrast. The cool shadows are blue and violet mixes to set off the complementary orange-yellow sunlit walls and roofs. While also a Mediterranean scene, the street shown left was in mellower light and the actual colours of the stonework were pale and delicately textured.

To represent them I used a lower-key range of colours, diluting them more to achieve subtle shades. Even the windows are not painted starkly, to avoid making too much of a contrast and to retain the soft atmosphere. FRENCH VILLAGE STREET The strong use of Cobalt Blue sets off the warmer yellow and orange walls, while the red door draws the viewer’s eye down to the end of the street.
