Many counsellors were trained at a time when no formal certi®cation of such courses took place and many counsellors had been practising successfully for a number of years. The experienced practitioner route, sometimes called the `Ten Year Clause' (Frankland, 1995), was aimed at this group of people and required a minimum of ten years continued counselling practice to qualify. This scheme will be formally withdrawn at the end of 2001. 5 hours per month, minimum annual client contact hours 18 TRAINING IN COUNSELLING & PSYCHOTHERAPY of 150 per year, the provision of two cases studies (only one study being required for those having successfully completed a BACP accredited counsellor training course), a personal philosophy of counselling, a diary of a recent month's work and a supervisor's and proposer's statement were among the range of additional factors required for both groups.
