Castellana Grotte holds the most beautiful karst caves in the world. Here we are in the hinterland of the Bari area, a few miles from Alberobello but also from the coastline of Polignano a Mare and Monopoli. As can easily be guessed, the city’s main attraction is the well-known speleological complex located very close to the inhabited area. But that’s not all! In fact, like all the surrounding villages, Castellana Grotte too can boast a very interesting historical centre, with a mediaeval soul. A true rare gem for lovers of Romanesque architecture is the church named after Pope St. Leon, which is also the oldest in the city and houses in its interior several sculptures dating from the 16th and 18th centuries, unique in their kind.
